Wear a Hat
If you see me, chances are good that I will be wearing a hat, unless, of course, social customs are against it. And even then, there might be a time that a hat is necessary.
But why do I wear a hat? Is it because I am afraid of something falling on my head? Is it because my head reflects the light? Is it because I just think I look better in hats? The answer is no to all of the above.
No, the reason I wear a hat is to protect my head. I recently had a second bout with skin cancer, and you can read all about that in this post
From that, it would appear that I have sensitive skin that does not like the sun. So I put on lots of sunscreen, even just on a daily basis. And then I put on a hat on top of that. Why sunscreen on my head and a hat, too? Because you never know when you might need to take your hat off. If you go through a procedure like I have been through, you don’t want to take too many chances.
All the skin cancer prevention people recommend that you wear a hat, clothing that covers your arms and legs, and sunscreen if you are going to be out in the sun. I have not yet taken to wearing long sleeves in the summer, but I do follow the hat and sunscreen recommendations.
Also, for me, a baseball cap does not qualify as a suitable hat. I like a hat with a brim all around, which is also what the skin cancer prevention folks recommend. If you are follicly challenged as I am (that is to say that you have no hair) that opening at the back of a baseball cap is an invitation to burn a semicircle on the back of your head. Plus, a wide-brimmed hat helps to protect your face and neck as well as your head.
So I invite you to join me in wearing a hat. Hats used to be high style, and we can bring them back while also taking good care of our skin.
Wear a hat! It is good for you!
